French Family Restrained in $46,000 Crypto Extortion

Four masked individuals invaded a home in northern France early Sunday morning, holding a family captive for over three hours before making off with roughly $46,000 in cryptocurrency. According to BFMTV, the attack occurred in the town of Vendin-le-Vieil at around 4 a.m. The Béthune prosecutor’s office confirmed the primary target was a 40-year-old father employed as a salaried IT specialist in the digital currency sector.

Once inside the residence, the intruders secured the parents and their two children, aged eight and twelve, using black tape. The attackers then isolated the father from his family, assaulting him while demanding access to his digital funds. According to a police source cited by France Télévisions, the victim was forced to “communicate his identification information and codes.” During the ordeal, the couple’s 12-year-old daughter was struck in the face with car keys.

The suspects secured approximately €40,000 before fleeing the scene. The family eventually managed to break free, and firefighters arrived at approximately 7 a.m. The victims were referred for forensic medical examinations, and a victim support association has been assigned to assist them. An investigation into kidnapping and extortion by an organized gang is underway, led by regional judicial police and France’s anti-cybercrime office. All four suspects remain at large.

Rising Physical Threats

The Vendin-le-Vieil assault is part of an escalating trend of physical crypto extortion across France. Previous incidents this year include a September home invasion in Alès, where a couple was tied up for over two hours before neighbors heard screams and contacted authorities. In April, an armed man posing as a delivery worker in Montpellier attempted to obtain a crypto worker's private keys at gunpoint, though the victim managed to wrestle the weapon away. High-profile targets have also been affected, including an attempted kidnapping involving the wife of The Sandbox co-founder Sébastien Borget.

French authorities are responding to a sharp increase in these crimes. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that France recorded 77 incidents linked to cryptocurrency extortion, kidnapping, or unlawful detention in 2026, up from 45 cases in 2025. By late April, prosecutors had charged 88 suspects, including ten minors, across 12 investigations. The National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office has recorded more than 70 such cases in the first eight months of 2026 alone.

Global Extortion Data

Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis estimates that physical attacks against cryptocurrency holders extracted over $30 million globally during the first half of 2026. The firm logged 46 attacks during that timeframe, producing a success rate of 26%, with France accounting for 30 publicly documented incidents. Home invasions constituted 37% of the tracked events, a significant jump from 14% in 2025.

Security firm CertiK recorded 52 global wrench attacks during the first six months of 2026, an increase of 33.3% from the previous year. Financial exposure associated with these incidents soared to $124.1 million, compared to roughly $10.5 million during the same period in 2025. France remains a focal point for these crimes, accounting for 33 of the incidents in CertiK’s dataset, while home invasions in the country rose from just one documented case in the first half of 2025 to 20 during the same period this year.
