Major Bank Projects 10% Annual Return For Top Crypto Asset

A major Wall Street institution has formally included the largest cryptocurrency in its long-term financial forecasts for the first time. The 31st annual edition of the 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report from JPMorgan Asset Management projects a 10% compound annual return for the digital asset over the next 10 to 15 years.

The forecasted return places the cryptocurrency ahead of traditional investment instruments. The report projects returns of 7.5% for U.S. large-cap stocks, 8.2% for real estate investment trusts, 7% for a classic 60/40 stock-bond portfolio, and 5.5% for gold.

Volatility and Portfolio Allocation

Despite the leading returns, the institution stopped short of adding the asset to its primary strategic portfolio allocation models. The report assigned the cryptocurrency an estimated annualized volatility of 55%, compared to about 17% for gold. Because of these price fluctuations, researchers built a separate, smaller covariance matrix for the asset.

"BTC currently lacks a clear role as a diversifier in balanced portfolios due to unstable correlations to other asset classes," the report read, adding that it is "premature to consider BTC as a diversifier in a balanced portfolio." The institution currently views the asset as speculative and tracks its performance alongside global money supply growth.

The forecast models a bullish scenario of 17% and a bearish scenario of negative 9.7% annually. The arithmetic annual return, a simple average of yearly gains, stands at 20.9%, roughly double the projected compound return investors would actually keep after price swings. The report noted that portfolio inclusion could evolve in the future if correlations stabilize, "particularly as regulation becomes clearer and liquidity and price discovery continue to improve."

Market Reaction and Institutional Flow

Industry figures weighed in on the new projections. Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan called the inclusion "a sign of increased institutional awareness of BTC," though he argued the 55% volatility assumption was too high.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight at you, then they add you to their Long-Term Capital Markets Assumptions paper and predict you’ll be the best-performing asset of the next decade," Hougan wrote on social media platform X.

The bank's forecast coincides with shifting exchange activity. According to XWIN Japan’s on-chain analysis, large holders managing between 1,000 and 10,000 units of the asset have returned to net accumulation. Their 60-day balance change shifted from negative 62,600 to positive 5,230 coins. However, the Coinbase Premium Index remained negative at approximately 0.1416%, pointing to weak U.S. spot demand as weekly exchange inflows reached 8,428.

The asset recently traded near $82,821. Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield held above 5%, presenting a competing return with less volatility.

The institution dismissed the argument that currency debasement will cause investors to flock to the asset, calling the idea "wide of the mark." Despite the firm's chief executive Jamie Dimon historically labeling the cryptocurrency a "pet rock" and a "hyper up fraud," the bank is simultaneously advancing its own blockchain initiatives, including bringing its JPM Coin dollar deposit token to Ethereum.
