Major Ethereum Layer-2 Network To Cease Operations By 2026

A prominent Ethereum Layer-2 infrastructure provider has announced plans to permanently shut down its blockchain network, reversing course after initially attracting massive amounts of user capital. Blast, an optimistic rollup network, will wind down its Layer-2 infrastructure operations completely, asking its participants to bridge their remaining assets back to the Ethereum mainnet. The decision to sunset the network stems from financial imbalances, citing that ongoing operating costs now exceed the total revenue generated by the chain.

The formal cessation of the network's primary operations is scheduled for October 2, 2026. However, the development team has structured a specific timeline to allow participants sufficient opportunity to retrieve their digital assets. Following the official shutdown date, individuals will have an additional window to process their withdrawals. Users must finalize their asset transfers by October 26, 2026, utilizing the platform's regular user interface. After this final deadline, the standard interface for managing and bridging capital will no longer be available to the public.

Rapid Initial Growth

The announcement marks a stark contrast to the protocol's explosive entry into the decentralized finance sector. When Blast first opened for initial deposits in November 2023, the platform experienced a rapid influx of capital from participants. Within just a few days of accepting funds, the network successfully pulled in $300 million. During this same early growth phase, the project disclosed a $20 million seed funding round on November 20, 2023, further solidifying its early financial backing.

This early momentum continued to accelerate throughout the winter months as anticipation built for the fully functional network. In the period leading up to the official mainnet launch in February 2024, individuals contributed heavily to the platform. Prior to deployment, users had contributed over $1.1 billion in total deposits, setting the stage for a major network launch.

Mainnet Launch Peak

The evening of the February 2024 mainnet launch represented the absolute peak of the platform's overall financial footprint. On launch night, the network's Total Value Locked (TVL), which also served as its peak network valuation, reached a staggering $2.3 billion.

A significant portion of this massive valuation was concentrated directly within the protocol's cross-chain bridging infrastructure. As the mainnet went live, the bridge held more than $1.46 billion in specific crypto assets, namely stETH, ETH, and DAI. During this initial rollout, the transition of assets was immense, with over 60 percent of the total value locked being bridged directly to the mainnet upon launch.

The network activity during this launch window was highly concentrated but exceptionally active. Upon launch, the system handled nearly 810,000 transactions. This heavy volume of network execution was generated across 37,000 active wallets. Despite establishing a multi-billion dollar footprint and processing hundreds of thousands of initial transactions, the protocol is now preparing for a complete shutdown.

According to The Block, the 2023 funding round that backed Blast was led by Paradigm and Standard Crypto. The Defiant reported that the network's total value locked has since collapsed to roughly $32 million, a fraction of its $2.3 billion peak, as activity drained from the chain ahead of the wind-down.
