Top Digital Asset Reclaims $80K as Treasury Shifts Markets
The premier cryptocurrency has advanced past the $80,000 threshold for the first time since early May, driven by shifting government debt policies and a significant influx of institutional capital. The upward movement was heavily influenced by the U.S. Treasury’s recent announcement detailing plans to double the scope of certain debt buyback operations. The strategic decision has effectively eased broader liquidity concerns, encouraging market participants to increase their exposure to risk-sensitive investments.
After navigating a subdued trading environment throughout June and July, where the asset's price predominantly languished below the $65,000 mark, this shift in market dynamics caught many bearish traders off guard. The ensuing short liquidations contributed to the buying pressure as these participants were forced to close out their losing positions.
As traditional markets digest the implications of increased borrowing and a weakening dollar, funds are rotating into non-yielding, scarce assets. According to data provided by Farside Investors, exchange-traded products tracking the leading cryptocurrency have absorbed $2.56 billion from U.S. participants since the start of last week. A substantial portion of this capital arrived in the most recent trading sessions, with the tracking platform Whale Insider recording a $200.76 million purchase by BlackRock on August 27 alone.
The Debasement Trade Returns
The renewed institutional interest is being largely characterized as a systemic hedge against currency devaluation. Bloomberg Intelligence ETF Analyst Eric Balchunas highlighted this structural shift on the social media platform X, contrasting the current market appetite with the earlier investment activity that surrounded the artificial intelligence sector.

“Gold and Bitcoin ETFs have combined for +$7b in flows in past week, by far a record for a 5-day period as debasement trade steals spotlight from AI,” he said.
The legislative backdrop in Washington is also contributing to the overall market sentiment. Recent meetings between industry executives and the White House, coupled with a renewed push to advance the upcoming Clarity Act, have injected further regulatory optimism. Together, these developments propelled the asset to a local peak of $81,160 before settling near $79,500.
Technical Caution Amid the Climb
Despite the fundamental developments and a nearly 30% price increase over a seven-day window, specific market metrics suggest the current move may be nearing a point of exhaustion.
Technical analysis published by CoinJournal indicates that upward momentum indicators are becoming increasingly stretched. The asset's relative strength index recently touched 85, placing it firmly within overbought territory. While this elevated metric does not guarantee an immediate market reversal, CoinJournal’s report warned that the current trajectory might be vulnerable to a near-term corrective pause as the risk of profit-taking increases. Should a pullback materialize, market watchers expect initial structural support to emerge near the 200-day exponential moving average of $74,700.
